Southern Region - The Tide Lands

Saltmere

A drowned city built on debt, tribute, and the things people become when the King needs a reason to keep collecting.

Entry 01

The City

Saltmere is built in layers, and the layer you live on tells everyone what you're worth.

Lantern light from the Merchant Quarter bleeds down onto rope bridges, rot-soft platforms, and smuggler shacks lashed together over the water. Everything smells of brine, dried fish, and the sour smoke of lamp oil burned by families who can't afford food. The city runs on a King's levy — miss it, and a red wax seal goes up on your door.

The Merchant Quarter

The upper city. Lantern-lit, orderly, and about as far from the Slums as Saltmere gets — which isn't far.

The Floating Slums

Shacks and rope-bridge platforms below the Quarter, home to Saltmere's dock thugs, thieves, and tribute-poor.

The Brine Gate

A market chokepoint that never fully sleeps — porters, fishmongers, and a current of bodies even at its slowest hour.

The Salt Lung

A hidden sea-cavern reached through flooded tunnels, lit by slow-breathing bioluminescence. Sanctuary for those the Ministry hunts.

The Iron Spires

Up the coast, eight days by ferry. Where the Ministry sends the Touched it catches. Nobody describes what's inside.

Checkpoints

There is no road out of Saltmere without one — each manned by a Deepstone rod and someone who knows how to read it.

Entry 02

Who Holds the Ledger

Power in Saltmere doesn't wear a crown. It wears a coat with a high collar, or it carries a debt book under its arm.

The King's Shadow

The regime's enforcement arm. High-collared black coats, a small bright throat-pin, and searchlights that never stop moving.

The Ministry

Oversees the registration and "processing" of the Touched. Officer Gault has processed thousands.

Viktor

A ledger-master who turns debt into ownership. Collars the desperate, then decides how they earn their way out — if they do.

Crews & enforcers

Local muscle like Mossen's crew and Karch's outer-sector runners keep tribute flowing up the chain, one broken door at a time.

Entry 03

The Ledger of Terms

A running account — updated with each book

Core mechanics, First Break, banking, and discipline terms now live on the Magic System page — this ledger keeps to Saltmere's own local vocabulary.

Agor
A smuggled commodity traded alongside silk and silver on the black market.
Lowsun
Both a season on Saltmere's calendar and the name of a street gang marked by a red kerchief at the elbow.
Chief reeve
A city bureaucrat whose clerks quietly process bribes, chits, and everything the King's ledgers don't officially see.
Entry 04

Dramatis Personae

Before the Reckoning, in the order you meet them.

Pilika

Protagonist · Courier, thief, Touched

A dock-rat courier running debts for her father, Pilika didn't choose the Hum — it woke inside her in a room she doesn't talk about, and it's been burning through her ever since. She reads Saltmere's underworld like a ledger and moves through it like she was born owing someone.

Jorik

Pilika's father

A gambler with a talent for losing more than he had, Jorik's debts are the reason his daughter still runs Saltmere's rooftops after dark — debts that outlived him. He didn't survive the night her power broke loose for the first time, and she has been carrying both his ledger and that moment ever since.

Viktor

Ledger-master

Viktor turns debt into ownership with the patience of a man who has never once had to raise his voice to get what he wants. He keeps his books cleaner than his conscience, and he has never mistaken cruelty for inefficiency.

Karch

Crew boss, outer sectors

Karch keeps tribute flowing from the Slums up to the Ministry, and he's very good at making sure the ledger stays neat — even when neatening it costs someone their life. He is not a man you want owing him information.

Officer Gault

Ministry officer

Gault has processed thousands of Touched through the Ministry's books, and he keeps a second ledger for the bribes that make the first one lie. He'll take payment from anyone, as long as the price is right and the receipt stays quiet.

Basalt

Sergeant, King's Shadow

Basalt hunts the way water finds a crack — quietly, patiently, without much interest in whether you saw him coming. A harpoon across his back and a rowing shoulder broken and reset wrong are the only warning Saltmere gives you before he's already there.

Senna

Keeper of the Salt Lung

Senna built a sanctuary in the drowned dark beneath Saltmere for Touched people the Ministry hasn't found yet, and she runs it on one rule: no names. Her hands, scaled from years of channel work, know exactly what the Hum costs a body — and exactly what banking it will cost Pilika.

Aro

Courier, sixteen

Sixteen and trying hard to be older, Aro runs messages through Saltmere's underworld with a face that gives away every card before it's played. He'd follow Pilika into the tunnels under the city without being asked twice.

Mihal Drevet

Fish-stall broker, Viktor's lower house

Mihal runs Viktor's lower house from behind a fish-stall front, and three years of it has taught him every entry point, every exit, and every thief who's tried to use them. He smiles like a clerk closing a column — right before he closes the trap.

Talen

From Pilika's past

Talen knew Pilika before the Hum, before the debts, before she became someone the Ministry hunts — and when he finally sees what she's carrying under her sleeve, old affection and old fear arrive in the same breath. He still hands her a key anyway.

The Masked Man

??? · Touched, old power

He appears when the story needs him to, and not a moment before, wearing marks that glow gold instead of amber — old, perfect, and nothing like the ragged power Pilika carries. He asks more questions than he answers.

Welcome to Saltmere.
Watch your footing on the lower platforms.

Western Region - The Scorched Expanse

Sandspear

A gladiator city built on discipline and spectacle, where the crowd cheers for men who are already breaking and never knows it.

Entry 01

The City

Sandspear runs on sand, sun, and an order nobody has to enforce out loud — you learn where you stand the first time you walk the fighters' corridor.

Everything here is cut from the same pale sandstone: the holding cells below ground, the ramp that climbs into blinding light, the tiered galleries that hold a hundred thousand people watching the same raked sand. It is the Ministry of Order's capital, and the arena is its whole public argument — discipline as entertainment, and the crowd never asked what's underneath either one.

The Great Arena

Raked white sand under open sky, tiered sandstone galleries climbing toward a hundred thousand seats, and a shaded box on the northern arc reserved for the Ministry's ranking watchers.

The Holding Compound

A high-walled courtyard with a single ground-level access arch. Fighters live here between bouts — mounting block for announcements, weapon racks, bathwells, and guards who reposition the instant the muster bell rings.

Utility & Cistern Corridors

Damp sandstone tunnels beneath the arena's northern support arch, running the perimeter under the sand floor. The maintenance routes a hunted man learns before anyone else does.

Desert Docks

Past the dune line, where cargo moves in and out of Sandspear under guard — one of the places this story's watchers keep circling back to.

Oasis Markets

The Ministry of Order's public face: trade, spectacle, and the ordinary daylight business of a capital that also happens to run a fortress.

The Salt-Flats

Dry basin country beyond the dune line, worked in sweep grids by the King's Shadow's dust-skimmers. Gault runs it like doctrine: methodical, unimaginative, and very hard to outrun.

Outside the capital, Sandspear's reach runs thin: Dunewatch, Mirage, and Bleached Bones dot the Scorched Expanse, along with the unranked circuit — Port Kessen, the Dust Bowl, backwater pits out in Meridian territory — where a fighter with no name and no broker record can win three bouts in under thirty seconds and vanish before anyone thinks to ask how.

Entry 02

The Chain of Command

Order in Sandspear wears two different uniforms, and they don't answer to each other.

The Ministry of Order

Sandspear's ruling institution: entertainment, gladiatorial combat, and elite military training, on the surface. Underneath, something built into the architecture itself that the arena's own fighters were never meant to understand.

The King's Shadow

The regime's hunting and intelligence arm — a separate chain of command from the Ministry, with its own umbrella over the Ministry's senior tier. Trained Terenoch at nine years old. Runs the sweep trying to reclaim him now.

Orso

Sandspear's arena manager. Crimson coat, brass signet rings, and a habit of ringing the muster bell crisp when it's business and flat, almost apologetic, when it's a death. Keeps the red-sealed Ministry contracts under his arm.

Gault

A King's Shadow officer running Sandspear's sweep for Terenoch — dry-basin pincers, dust-skimmers, doctrine over improvisation. Terenoch wrote the baseline for this exact grid twelve years ago, in a different desert.

Cael Vauss

Terenoch's instructor at the Shadow's Dominarch academy. Taught, on the first day, that the Core is a failure and suppression the only acceptable response. Terenoch spent twelve years proving him right, until he didn't.

Entry 03

The Muster Roll

A running account — updated with each book

Core mechanics, First Break, Core Fever, and discipline terms now live on the Magic System page — this roll keeps to Sandspear's own local vocabulary.

The Ministry of Order
Sandspear's ruling institution. Entertainment and combat training on the surface; something else built into the architecture underneath.
The King's Shadow
The One King's Touched-hunting and surveillance corps — a separate chain of command from the Ministry it watches.
Classification processing
The Ministry's intake procedure for a captured or registered Touched person, run through port intake officers; sorts by discipline.
Muster bell
Two brass tones, rung from the mounting block for an unscheduled assembly. Crisp for business. Flat, almost apologetic, for a death.
Sweep grid
The King's Shadow's search pattern for a target in open desert — dry-basin pincers worked by dust-skimmers, methodical by design.
Entry 04

Dramatis Personae

Before the Break, in the order you meet them.

Terenoch Vauss

Protagonist · Arena fighter, former King's Shadow

Twenty-eight years hunting the Touched for the Ministry taught Terenoch exactly what he needed to survive: read the angles, give nothing away, feel nothing that shows. Twelve of suppressing his own First Break taught him the same lesson from the other side — and now the crystal spreading under his skin is calling in everything he owes.

Cypher

Challenger · Forge-discipline Touched, recruiter

Nineteen years past his own Break and silver-scarred to prove it, Cypher spent nineteen weeks in the stands cataloguing Terenoch's decline before he said a word to him. He isn't selling a cause. He's offering a method in trade for a favor, and he already knows exactly what Terenoch is worth to him.

Marek

Rival gladiator

A jagged purple scar down the jaw and a champion's certainty that speed is just another thing to out-muscle. Marek's cover-and-close has worked on everyone he's fought so far. He hasn't fought anyone like Cypher yet.

Orso

Arena manager

Crimson coat, brass rings, and a mounting block he prefers to lateral rumor. Orso runs Sandspear's fighters efficiently, and without much patience for questions about where the Ministry's sealed contracts really come from.

Named, not yet drawn

Varos
A fellow fighter with a broken-nose hiss of a voice and a habit of touching his own throat before delivering bad news. Knows things through the East port intake officers he probably shouldn't.
Cael Vauss
Terenoch's instructor at the Shadow's Dominarch academy, nineteen years ago. Taught that the Core is a failure and suppression the only acceptable response.
Gault
The King's Shadow officer running Sandspear's sweep for Terenoch — methodical, doctrine-bound, and closing the ring smaller by the week.
Marrow
Seven years old when Terenoch found her seizing on a smelting-shed floor and, for the only time in twenty-eight years, chose to walk away without sounding the whistle. She isn't on the page yet. She's the reason everything else is.

Welcome to Sandspear.
Mind the sand. It remembers everyone who's bled on it.

The Broken Sigil Chronicles - Magic System

The Core

Two coasts, two people breaking open, and one regime that already knows exactly what to do with what comes out of them.

Entry 01

The Core & the First Break

Two people who never meet carry the same power under their skin, and neither one gets to choose what it costs.

Some people are born Touched — carrying a dormant force that erupts, unchosen, in an involuntary First Break. In Saltmere they call the dormant power the Hum, and its active use the Current; in Sandspear, Terenoch and Cypher just call it the Core. Both books agree on what it does: a First Break can warp wood, hurl objects, or turn living tissue to stone, and it happens to the body whether the person is ready or not. Pilika's came loose in her father's collapsing shack. Terenoch's had been building, suppressed, for twelve years before it finally showed on his skin.

Every Touched person carries the mark of it — branching, crystalline Core Marks under the skin, cold to the touch, pulsing faintly with the heartbeat when the power is active. They read wrong to mirrors and wrong to Ministry detection instruments, which is most of why the Ministry built instruments in the first place.

Entry 02

Two Disciplines, One Fire

The Core doesn't manifest the same way twice. So far, these two books have shown us two of its disciplines.

Current — Pilika

Kinetic, gravitational displacement, paired with a separate destructive pulse she's still learning to aim. It's what put three of Viktor's enforcers in the wreckage of her father's shack, and what makes her worth cash to anyone with a Deepstone rod.

Forge — Terenoch & Cypher

Force and density. Crystal plating erupts from the skin; the ground fractures under an apparent increase in mass; loose grains drift toward the user under a localized pull. Left unchecked, it doesn't stop at the skin — it keeps converting inward.

Both books' own material names five disciplines in total for the wider Core system, but only Current and Forge have actually been demonstrated on the page so far, in these two manuscripts — the other three are outside what this page can confirm.

Entry 03

Banking vs. Directing

Two mentors, two coasts, two completely different answers to the same question: what do you do with a power that's already killing you?

Banking is Senna's teaching, in the Salt Lung beneath Saltmere: reroute the surge into a substrate — the ground, the stone — instead of letting it discharge. It's how a trained Touched person walks past a Deepstone checkpoint without the rod twitching. It is also, slowly, a death sentence. Overuse burns the channels out from the inside, and the blue-white light of a Core Mark shifts toward amber at the extremities as a warning. Amber climbing toward the heart means the channel is dying. Numbness means it's already dead — fossilized, cold and jade-smooth, no pulse left under it. A normal Break gives roughly eighteen months between First Break and that final amber reaching the heart. A Break as loud as Pilika's compresses that clock to six.

Directing is Cypher's method, taught to Terenoch in a Sandspear holding cell: suppression — the King's Shadow's official doctrine, drilled into every recruit at the Dominarch academy under instructors like Cael Vauss — is exactly what builds the pressure that causes a catastrophic Break in the first place. The fix isn't containment, it's a controlled conduit: let the energy move through a stabilizing point instead of damming it. Done right, it turns Core Fever into a controllable resonance instead of a runaway conversion into Core Burn.

These are not the same technique solving the same problem. Banking buys a Touched person invisibility at the cost of their own channels. Directing buys a Touched person time against a Break that's already turning them to stone. Whether either method would work on the other book's problem is not something either manuscript has tested yet.

Core Mark — Blue-white Overused / Fevered — Amber Unchecked — Fossilized / Core Burn
Entry 04

What the Regime Does With Them

Pilika and Terenoch are on opposite coasts, in different Ministries, chasing different mentors — and they've independently found the same thing underneath the floor.

In Saltmere, Senna tells Pilika plainly what the Iron Spires are for: the King's Shadow harvests the Touched it catches and renders them down into a Cure for Core Burn that buys the regime's favorites another twenty years of life.

In Sandspear, Terenoch reaches the same conclusion from the inside, on his own — twenty-eight years of Shadow service spent walking past towers, bridges, road pylons, and palace walls he'd been trained to read as suppression architecture. They were something else: absorption arrays fed by the bodies of Breaking Touched, the energy of the rupture harvested and refined by death into something structurally permanent.

Neither of them is guessing. Two POV characters, two regions, two independent confirmations of the same machine.

Tools of the trade

Deepstone

A black mineral that absorbs and negates Core energy rather than reflecting it. Forged into detection rods, restraint cuffs and collars, and Shadow weapons — a "systemic drag" that chokes the Core's flow until a Touched person's own veins feel like ice.

Tide Crystal & Core Shards

Senna's parting gift to Pilika: a fist-sized shard that amplifies the Hum instead of suppressing it, tearing the channels wider with every use. Old, worked amber-core tools of the same family can apparently bypass standard Ministry-issue Deepstone restraints entirely.

Entry 05

Terms of the Core

A running account — built from Before the Reckoning and Before the Break

The Core
The primordial power every Touched person carries a dormant reservoir of. Called the Hum in Saltmere, the Core plainly in Sandspear.
The Hum / the Current
Saltmere's own vocabulary: the Hum for the dormant power, the Current for its active use.
First Break
The involuntary rupture that marks a Touched person's first uncontrolled use of the Core.
Core Mark
Branching, crystalline formations under the skin, cold to the touch, present on every Touched person.
Current (discipline)
Kinetic/gravitational displacement — Pilika's discipline.
Forge (discipline)
Force and density — crystal plating, ground fracture, localized gravitational pull. Terenoch's discipline, and, by his own account, Cypher's.
Banking
Rerouting a Core surge into a substrate instead of the body, to pass a Deepstone checkpoint undetected. Burns out channels over time.
Amber (channel amber)
The warning color a Core Mark shifts toward as its channel burns out from overuse.
Core Fever
The physical progression following an unmanaged First Break — translucent skin, then crystalline ridges breaking the surface.
Core Burn
The terminal stage: full neuromuscular lock and petrification, working inward until the conversion reaches the heart.
Deepstone
Black, energy-absorbing mineral forged into Ministry detection tools and King's Shadow restraints and weapons.
Tide Crystal / Core shard
Portable amplifying fragments of the Core; the opposite of Deepstone. Tear a Touched person's channels wider with every use.
The Iron Spires
The King's Shadow's coastal holding-and-harvesting site for captured Touched, roughly eight days by ferry up the coast from Saltmere.
The Cure
What the Shadow renders harvested Touched down into at the Iron Spires — extends the lives of the regime's favorites.
Classification processing
The Ministry's intake procedure for sorting a Touched person by discipline, run through port intake officers.

The Core doesn't care which coast you're on.
It only asks what you're willing to become to survive it.
